Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Serey Die – captaining Ivory Coast in Serge Aurier’s injury absence – saw a deflected effort find the net in the 58th minute and his team progressed as runners-up behind Morocco, despite Joslin Kamatuka getting on the scoresheet for the Brave Warriors, after Zaha marked his first start of the tournament with a fine solo effort.Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet came on to dish out further punishment to a Namibia side who started brightly.Shalulile headed narrowly wide from Petrus Shitembi’s chipped cross in the 20th minute before forcing Sylvain Gbohouo to save with his feet.An initially abject showing from Ibrahima Kamara’s men picked up and Gradel crashed an emphatic finish over Lloyd Kazapua in the Namibia goal, although replays showed he was fractionally offside as he darted onto Franck Kessie’s lofted throughball.#LesÉléphants take the lead with the first half…#TotalAFCON2019 #NAMCIV pic.twitter.com/6iK3MZAc9z — CAF (@CAF_Online) July 1, 2019 Namibia were once again on the front foot after the restart but their hopes were dashed before the hour when Serey Die’s speculative 35-yard strike glanced off Ryan Nyambe and nestled in the corner.Ivory Coast will face the winner of Group E in the first knockout round, with Mali, Tunisia and Angola all in contention to top that section. They would do well to avoid much more of the slack defending that allowed Kamatuka to slot home in the 71st minute.Crystal Palace star Zaha gave them breathing space with six minutes to play, jinking inside challenges and lashing home a low strike from inside the box, while substitute Cornet’s emphatic finish from 12 yards gave a further indication of the attacking firepower at Kamara’s disposal.last_img read more

Pochettino delighted with Tottenham youngsters’ characterPochettino delighted with Tottenham youngsters’ character

first_imgMauricio Pochettino thinks the experience of beating Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the Audi Cup was a valuable one for the youngest members of his Tottenham squad.Spurs lifted the pre-season trophy after a penalty shoot-out win over the Bundesliga champions following a 2-2 draw, having beaten Real Madrid 1-0 earlier in the week. One final friendly with Inter follows before the Premier League season kicks off against Aston Villa, and Pochettino thinks his side are looking in good nick. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? “It was a very positive experience,” he told the club’s website. “I am so happy with the performance and behaviour of the players.”We are learning a lot and improving a lot every day. I am so happy and we keep going.”When you play a team like Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, always to have this sort of experience is an amazing thing for the players – for the young players and of course for the senior players to build their fitness and be stronger every day.“We are having a very tough pre-season but we are competing very well and if we create this habit to compete really well, of course it’s going to help us in the season to try to fight for big things.”Pochettino has given game time to plenty of Spurs’ young guns over the course of pre-season. Jack Roles, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga stepped up against Bayern to score the last three penalties in a 6-5 win.Tottenham celebrate 2019-20He has been impressed with what he has seen so far, noting that they have shown their character as much as their talent.”No doubt about that,” Pochettino added.“They showed great character in Singapore and in China playing against Juventus and Manchester United and now against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.“It’s clear that we have young players, maybe with not too much experience, but with great character and personality and that is a very important thing.”Spurs may have to turn to their youth players after an injury to stand-in right-back Juan Foyth provided the sole disappointment against Bayern. The Argentina international was stretchered off after twisting his ankle in the second half, after himself coming on as a substitute.Following Kieran Trippier’s move to Atletico Madrid and an injury to Serge Aurier, Kyle Walker-Peters is currently the most senior right-back in the squad. Baker Mayfield Takes Back His Apology For Ohio State Flag PlantingBaker Mayfield Takes Back His Apology For Ohio State Flag Planting

Oklahoma defeated West Virginia 59-31. (Photo by Brett Deering/Getty Images)Baker Mayfield’s flag planting at Ohio State following Oklahoma’s blowout win in Ohio Stadium remains one of college football’s best moments in recent memory. The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback planted an OU flag at midfield following Oklahoma’s big win over Ohio State in September 2017. The 31-16 win came a year after the Buckeyes’ blowout win in Norman, Okla.Mayfield was highly emotional following the game, taking a flag from the bench and planting it at midfield with his teammates cheering. The Cleveland Browns quarterback issued an apology for the move following the game. “After the game, I did not mean for it to be disrespectful towards any Ohio State people at all, especially not the team or the players,” Mayfield told reporters in 2017. “They’re a great team and a great program. I didn’t mean it to be disrespectful at all. We do the flag thing at OU-Texas, so that’s just something I got caught up in an emotional win. Yeah, it should have been something I did in the locker room, so I apologize for doing it in the middle of the field.”Mayfield admitted to GQ that he wasn’t being honest with that apology, though.I begin to ask him how heartfelt that apology actually was, on a scale of 1 to 10, but I can barely get the question out before he answers. “Zero,” he says. He repeats himself forcefully, looking me right in the eye so that I don’t miss the point. “Zero. Absolutely not.”Then the moment cools and the storm passes. “Which might hurt some Ohio fans’ feelings,” he says. “But I think we’re all good now.”Mayfield added that he didn’t plan to plant the flag, but was simply filled with emotion in the moment.“A lot of things I do are orchestrated, but things like [that], in the moment, emotionally, I’m just being me,” he said. “I worked so hard to beat them after they beat us at home the year before that I was so excited and overcome with emotion that one thing led to another. But a lot of Ohio people didn’t like me after that one.”Ohio State fans were pretty upset with Mayfield’s move back in 2017, but many of them now root for Mayfield in Cleveland, so they’re likely not too bothered by this revelation.last_img read more
