Joining me today is none other than my wife, Mrs. Pistols — Jennifer Porter. She knows more about a sewing machine than I’ll ever know about a spread offense but when it comes to football…well…let’s go to the questions.1. Pretty interesting year for OSU coming off a BCS win and reloading with a frosh at QB. What are you most excited about? My excitement for football this year revolves around anything that has to do with tailgating, wearing orange dresses, and hanging out with friends. I’m also literally a fair weather fan, so I’ll also add that to the list: perfectly crisp fall weather. I’m sure you asked this for giggles since most of your readers are under the impression that my knowledge of football is non-existent. I let you make jokes about me because it makes for comedic writing, but the truth is I know more than you let on. I feel like I could roughly define most football terms you could throw at me, with the exception of holding. But let’s be honest- I don’t think half the males in America actually know what holding is[1. This is probably true.]. The real issue here is my lack of interest in football, but I can actually get pretty emotional about a game now and then. Just as long as the temperature is between 68 and 80 degrees. 2. Rank these players in order of your favorite to least favorite and tell me why: Weeden, Dez, Zac, Blackmon, Barry Sanders, Rashaun, Joe Randle, and Justin GilbertThe first words that come to my mind for each of these players: Weeden (Melanie), Dez (criminal record), Zac (eyes, duh), Blackmon (Olivia), Barry (Heisman), Rashaun (Woods), Joe Randle (I think he’s supposed to be good this year), and Justin Gilbert (runs fast). On my highly complex rating scale, that puts them in the following order: Weeden (because Melanie might be reading)Zac (I can’t believe Melanie beat out his eyes)Barry (because I think he might be a legend)Blackmon (because charity work is kinda cool)Gilbert (because I know he’s “your boy”)Rashaun (because I vaguely remember him from college)Joe (because he’s better than Dez)Dez (because no one likes a criminal) 3. People want to know how you forecast this season playing out so…who plays for the title? Wins the Heisman? What is OSU’s record?I think I stopped paying attention to football statistics around 2004, so I’ll go with USC for the title. Are you serious with the Heisman question? The list of players I know this year includes two from the previous question plus Lunt. And not just from OSU – that’s for all college football. Though I feel like I’ve heard whispers about a guy named Matt something[2. I think she means Barkley, I’ll give it to her], so I’ll go with him. Are you asking about OSU’s record of all time? Football? I feel like you’re trying to trick me by making me answer about this year. But if there’s one thing I know about OSU football, it’s that we haven’t played a game yet this season. All time, I’ll put us at 38% wins, which would probably total to about 282 wins and 462 losses[3. Actually 531-523-47 for a 50.4% winning percentage]. Make sure your readers know I answered all questions in orange. For brownie points.
Oklahoma State hires Mike Yurcich as new offensive coordinatorOklahoma State hires Mike Yurcich as new offensive coordinator
You’re drunk, Gundy. Go home. After two straight hires of Dana Holgorsen and Todd Monken, OSU has hired a guy named Mike Yurcich as its new offensive coordinator/QB coach.Gundy made the announcement on Twitter this morning (possibly from either his back porch or maybe the Bagel Cafe in Stillwater). Who knows…Proud to announce Mike Yurcich as the new Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks coach at #okstate #GoPokes— Mike Gundy (@CoachGundy) February 7, 2013Wait…WHO?This is going to be really funny when agundy announces the real OC.— thinks we go 8-4 guy (@Pokelahoma) February 7, 2013Agreed.Here’s what Google tells me about Mike Yurich:He graduated from California University (of Pennsylvania) and played QB there. He got his Master of Education from Saint Francis (Indiana) (he was a grad assistant briefly at Indiana) then moved on to Edinboro University (Pennsylvania) where he was the OC. He became the OC at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, PA in 2011.Now, as of today, he runs one of the best D1 offenses in the country. Here were his stats last year for Shippensburg — a D2 school.Yurcich’s offense at Shippensburg (is that a real sentence?) scored 46.8 points a game last year. Averaged 390 passing yards a game. It was weird though, no warning, no press release — heck, Gundy could have announced it at his press conference yesterday. Yet he announces it via Twitter 12 hours after he says he doesn’t really understand Twitter. The lesson as always, I guess? Don’t try and predict what Mike Gundy is going to do.Three more hilarious tweets.@pistolsguy dude googling his last name he’s not the first to come up….I feel like Gundy trying to win some mad scientist award.— thinks we go 8-4 guy (@Pokelahoma) February 7, 2013 If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. At Oklahoma State, Money Really Does Buy GreatnessAt Oklahoma State, Money Really Does Buy Greatness
There was a great longer article in the Tulsa World at the end of last week about Mike Holder’s first 10 years on the job. That culminated on Wednesday which was his 10th anniversary.Did you know that only two men have been there longer as the AD?Ed Gallagher (1915-31) and Henry P. Iba (1935-69). “Pretty fast company right there,” Holder says. “I like that.”What I found to be interesting is how much money OSU has raised (and lost!), mostly during Holder’s tenure. Here is Holder’s estimate. From 1970 through 1999, Holder says, OSU spent a total of $10 million on athletic facilities. In 2000-10, he reports, OSU spent $400 million on facilities. Now not all of that was for football, but we all know the king of American sports is what drives economics at an athletic department. Because of that, I wanted to look at the correlation between money spent and winning percentage. How much is each win worth if we presume that all that money was spent on football (and it wasn’t).[1. We’re also not taking into account inflation etc. This is not an economics blog.]Here’s a look. You want to be on the bottom right of this graph where you don’t have to spend a ton of money but you still win a ton of games. OSU has been on the bottom left (good for the pocketbook!) and the upper right (good for morale!)The answer to the latter is easy. OSU won 171.5 games between 1970 and 1999 (for the college kids, there used to be ties … crazy, I know). At $10 million spent on facilities, that’s $58,000 a W. OSU has won 117 games since 2000. That’s $3.4 million. Success is pricey.“We’ve won in every sport here, except in football,” Holder told the Tulsa World. “We wanted to try to do something to change that, so when you went to the football stadium on Saturday, you actually had a chance to win the football game. I wanted to see what that was like.”It feels pretty good, doesn’t it?If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. Oklahoma State Sugar Bowl Gifts Include Watches, Hats and Gift SuiteOklahoma State Sugar Bowl Gifts Include Watches, Hats and Gift Suite
One of the traditions of bowl season has become which bowl hands out the best gifts to its participants. This year, the Sugar Bowl is handing out a Fossil watch, New Era Cap and commemorative coin to each player which doesn’t sound very cool until you also note that there’s a gift suite involved. What is a gift suite? According to Sports Business Daily, it’s basically a free trip to the mall.Gift suites are set up as private events in which game participants, and often bowl VIPs, are given an order form and allowed to select a gift, or gifts, up to a value that is predetermined by each specific bowl, not to exceed the NCAA limit of $550 per person.Last year, for the Cactus Bowl, that included TVs, Keurigs and Beats headphones. This year won’t necessarily be better since there’s a $550 limit, but it might be different depending on who sponsors the Sugar Bowl’s suite. Just two days after picking up an offer from Oklahoma State following a visit to Stillwater, 2017 defensive back Thabo Mwaniki announced that he has committed to play for the Cowboys on twitter:Thank You God.? pic.twitter.com/1oS6OFGQif— Thabo Mwaniki (@thabomwaniki) July 30, 2016 If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. I mentioned earlier in the week that Mwaniki had confirmed his visit to Stillwater in The Reload; even stating that an offer seemed imminent in my opinion. The offer was extended, and Mwaniki wasted no time pulling the trigger. The Denton Guyer defensive back pledges to OSU over offers from Air Force, Army, Colorado, Colorado State, UConn, Fresno State, Purdue, SMU, UTSA, North Texas, and New Mexico. At 5-11, 180-pounds, Mwaniki is a versatile athlete who is a do-it-all on offense and defense, and has good experience playing both defensive back and safety. Expect OSU to put him to good use on defense either at safety or cornerback and with his experience at both, he’s a luxury addition with the ability to move all over the field.

There are still more questions than answers regarding OSU’s arguably most questionable position group entering the 2016 season. The offensive line struggled for a second consecutive season last year and, even though coaches are very hesitant to be show too much optimism, Mike Gundy is confident the group is improving.“Just in the last couple practices, I’ve seen them start to make some strides,” Mike Gundy said in his weekly Cowboy Football Roundup with Dave Hunziker. “We’re covering the defensive lineman up, and we need to continue to work on finishing blocks. Now that we’re covering them up, we have to sink our hips and we have to run our feet. We have to finish those blocks in order to give those backs a chance to make cuts. We like where we’re at.”Gundy also noted the emergence of redshirt freshman Marcus Keyes at left guard to be a big factor in his reason for optimism, and spoke highly of incoming junior college transfer Larry Williams, who is listed No. 2 at left guard behind Keyes. As for X-factors to watch this season, underrated junior college lineman Shane Richards is expected to make some contributions this season as well Gundy says.“The incoming class is a good group, it’ll take awhile to develop those players. Shane Richards (6-8, 330lbs.), hopefully he can help us first of October, Larry Williams gives us a chance. We just have to find the right fit and stay healthy.”
Zach Sinor Unfazed About Being A Ray Guy Finalist, Shares How He Got To OSUZach Sinor Unfazed About Being A Ray Guy Finalist, Shares How He Got To OSU
One of Oklahoma State’s best players is a guy you may not have heard much about — punter Zach Sinor. The sophomore punter from Castroville, Texas is ranked No. 31 in the NCAA in yards per punt at 43.0. More importantly he’s pinned the other team inside their own 20 yard line 26 times in 2016, tied for No. 3 in the nation. He’s also somehow only had one touchback. He’s also up as a finalist for the Ray Guy award, given to the nation’s best punter. The ‘Seisman’, if you will. Here’s the list of finalists for the 2016 Ray Guy Award.Austin Barnes (Jr.), Eastern Michigan UniversityNicholas Conte (Sr.), University of VirginiaSteven Coutts (So.), University of Louisiana at LafayetteJoseph Davidson (Jr.), Bowling Green State UniversityMichael Dickson (So.), University of TexasHayden Hunt (Sr.), Colorado State UniversityCameron Johnston (Sr.), Ohio State UniversityZach Sinor (So.), Oklahoma State UniversityJohnny Townsend (Jr.), University of FloridaMitch Wishnowsky (So.), University of UtahSinor didn’t seem too worried about winning the award when asked about it at the on Monday.“I don’t really look into that stuff,” said Sinor. “Yeah, the awards will come, but my job is to pin them back and help the defense out the best I can.”He actually attended several Ray Guy camps growing up which is pretty funny.“I watched his film,” said Sinor of the Ray Guy camps. He gives you a little disc to watch. A lot of drops, directional punting, he really broke it down which helped me a lot.“As a freshman [in high school] I was a QB and a defensive tackle, a little odd. But my sophomore year I was kicking the ball around one day, and they said you’re the punter. Then I was on JV as the punter, and I hit a 45- 50-yard punt, so then they said you’re on varsity.“So after that I averaged like 39 my sophomore year on varsity. So after that I went to a Ray Guy camp, and they said ‘you have a pretty big leg. You can probably kick in college.’ So I kept working at it and now I’m here.”“During spring ball, whenever that was, I saw him throwing it around one day and he throws it pretty good,” said head coach Mike Gundy of his former QB-turned-punter. “If we were smart, we’d probably have a fake punt with him throwing the ball. But, it’s kind of like with James Castleman – the season’s not over yet.”The punter is pretty much the least glamorous position on the field, but Sinor has been huge for Oklahoma State in several close games this year — in the Iowa State game, the Tech game this last weekend, Sinor flipped the field in some big spots.“I just know where we’re at in the field at all times, so if we’re inside the 45-yard line, I’ll go the net and do some pooch punts and if we’re outside of that I’ll just work on regular punts,” added Sinor. An extra 10-15 yards can be enormous for Glenn Spencer and his defense especially when Sinor never kicks it into the end zone. Manchester City 5 Liverpool 0: Aguero, Jesus & Sane punish Mane red Russell Greaves Last updated 2 years ago 21:31 9/9/2017 Getty Images Sadio Mane’s red card left Liverpool vulnerable and Manchester City capitalised in a 5-0 win on Saturday. Manchester City underlined their Premier League title credentials with a 5-0 thrashing of Liverpool as Sergio Aguero set a goalscoring landmark and Sadio Mane saw red.Saturday’s contest at the Etihad Stadium burst into life when Aguero broke the deadlock to become the Premier League’s all-time leading non-European goalscorer on 124.Liverpool were left facing a huge uphill battle when Mane was dismissed for raising his boot in a challenge for a bouncing ball with goalkeeper Ederson, who was taken off on a stretcher after prolonged treatment, but later confirmed to have escaped serious injury. Klopp also endured the joint-heaviest defeat of his managerial career. The victory takes Pep Guardiola’s men to the summit for at least a few hours, with their opponents now three points back following a first loss of the campaign.Record breaker… #mancity pic.twitter.com/jFYbdo2PZL— Manchester City (@ManCity) September 9, 2017Without the injured Vincent Kompany or suspended Raheem Sterling, City were initially put on the back foot by a visiting line-up still devoid of wantaway forward Philippe Coutinho’s services.Nicolas Otamendi’s clumsy challenge on Mohamed Salah gave the visitors an early sight of goal from a free-kick just to the right of the penalty area, but Alberto Moreno’s shot struck the two-man wall.City responded well and Kevin De Bruyne called compatriot Simon Mignolet into action at the other end, the Belgian goalkeeper making a solid save from the midfielder’s powerful low shot.Mignolet was also equal to Fernandinho’s skidding effort in the 13th minute as City began to emerge as the greater attacking force. And the breakthrough came when Liverpool’s defence was cut open by Kevin De Bruyne’s throughball and Aguero coolly rounded Mignolet before slotting home his sixth goal in as many home Premier League games against the Reds.Mane threatened an instant riposte with a surging run, which Fernandinho brought to a halt by foul means just on the edge of the box, earning a booking for his troubles.Emre Can was wasteful with the set-piece and City breathed another sigh of relief when Ederson saved smartly at Salah’s feet soon after. It was Liverpool’s turn to fret next when Ragnar Klavan was caught in possession deep in his own half by Jesus, who forced a corner from which John Stones drew a reflex stop from Mignolet. The visitors’ task was made all the more difficult when Mane saw red following his challenge on Ederson, ending both players’ outings, with Claudio Bravo introduced for City.Record breaker… #mancity pic.twitter.com/jFYbdo2PZL— Manchester City (@ManCity) September 9, 2017And Guardiola’s side made their numerical advantage count when Jesus, who had already seen a goal ruled out for offside, headed in the second from the impressive De Bruyne’s assist.Liverpool were evidently deflated and the game was put beyond them when Aguero selflessly squared for Jesus, taking Mignolet out of the equation and leaving his team-mate with a simple finish. The best was still to come from City’s perspective, with Sane – on for Jesus, substituted with an eye on Wednesday’s Champions League match at Feyenoord – putting the finishing touch on a flowing move before adding a fifth by arrowing a stunning left-footed strike into the top corner.Liverpool, meanwhile, will host Sevilla in midweek nursing the heaviest loss of Klopp’s tenure. Key Opta stats: – This was Jurgen Klopp’s first Premier League defeat away from home to one last season’s top seven sides (P10 W5 D4 L1).- Manchester City netted 5+ goals in a game versus Liverpool for the first time since March 1937 (5-1).- Since he made his Manchester City debut, Kevin De Bruyne has assisted 2+ goals in seven different Premier League games (29 assists in total in that period).- Sergio Aguero is now the top scoring non-European player in Premier League history (124), overtaking Dwight Yorke (123).- Aguero is the fourth player in Premier League history to score in six consecutive home apps vs a single side (also Alan Shearer against Everton, Thierry Henry against Aston Villa and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink against West Ham). read more

A lot of players are good technically, but they lack the desire to win matches.”But not these boys. I can say that despite what everyone has been saying, I can’t pinpoint the squad key players yet, simply because how good almost all of them are. All 23 have a shot at being picked for matches.”And the string of wins have further improved boosted their confidence, and they now have the belief they can make it to the final,” he explained.

From being 3-1 down in the home first leg, Felda knew they needed to win by three goals margin to secure a place in the semi-final and promptly went about to do just that. Shukor Adan turned in a captain’s performance to guide his players through to the next stage of the competition, creating the opening goal for Wan Zack Haikal. Ifedayo Olusegun gave Felda the lead on the night before Wan Zack again scored just before half time. “It was a tough match but the players were motivated to do well. We changed the system today and we managed to get four goals. However I was less than happy with the last 10 minutes when we became sloppy. We could have killed the game with 7 – 8 goals. Anyway, I must congratulate the players for giving 100% and go the mentality that impossible is nothing and everything is possible,” said an estatic B. Sathianathan after the match.Stung by the three goals conceded in the last 10 minutes of the first half, PKNP failed to recover from the shock and went further behind at the start of the second half. Zah Rahan Krangar got into the box for the first in the match and converted Thiago Augusto’s cross, a goal that proved to be the decider in the tie.The gulf in experience between the two sides was there to be seen. It was a factor that was acknowledged by Sathianathan himself after seeing his charges go from strength to strength with every goal scored.”Yes, experience was a key factor. The opening goal came from a cross from the birthday boy, Shukor. And it was a fantastic cross. We had crossing chances before but other players couldn’t deliver. It was Shukor who showed his experience with the move that got us back into the game. Turns out the old player who showed the young ones how to cross,” added Sathianathan. The win puts Felda into the semi-final where they will face Kedah, a team that they only just beaten last week, albeit a largely second string Kedah side.

Arsenal qualified for the Europa League knockout stages despite failing to impress in a dour 0-0 draw against Red Star Belgrade at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.A point proved enough to send Arsene Wenger’s side through as BATE Borisov were beaten 5-2 away to Cologne, who remain bottom of Group H but still have a chance of advancing following their victory. There were 11 changes to the Gunners side that beat Swansea City 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday, goalkeeper Matt Macey making his European debut in an inexperienced line-up. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Macey did his part to secure the point, tipping a header from Vujadin Savic against the crossbar as Red Star threatened to take a surprise lead into half-time.With impressive form in this competition not enough to earn Jack Wilshere an England call-up, his frustrations were deepened when Damien Le Tallec’s goal-line clearance denied him a first club goal since May 2015.Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud combined in spectacular fashion to settle the teams’ meeting a fortnight prior, but could not put their experience to use and find the breakthrough here, although Wenger’s side can secure top spot by winning at Cologne on November 23.We’ve qualified from Group H……but it’s not quite the result we were looking for tonight#AFCvRSB 0-0 (FT) pic.twitter.com/FAEe1pkNIP— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) November 2, 2017France international Giroud appeared to strain his hamstring after leaping to challenge Mitchell Donald in the air, but it did not stop him getting into a great position in the 10th minute.Ainsley Maitland-Niles surged towards the byline on the left side of the box before squaring for Giroud, whose first-time effort was blocked by Milan Borjan at the near post.Arsenal controlled possession but found further chances hard to come by until Giroud was slipped in by Joe Willock, who did well to dispossess Donald, but was unable to lift his shot over the onrushing Borjan.Wenger’s side could have gone into half-time behind, though, had Macey not tipped a header from Savic against the bar after the Red Star centre-back followed up Nemanja Radonjic’s blocked shot. What a save, Matt!Red Star break at speed and Macey is required to tip a looping header onto the crossbar#AFCvRSB 0-0 (36) pic.twitter.com/oN01FPkTeD— Arsenal FC (@Arsenal) November 2, 2017Richmond Boakye contrived to waste another chance before the break, failing to hit the target after racing in behind Rob Holding on a swift counter-attack.Red Star sat back after the restart and Arsenal had two claims for a penalty go unawarded, the first after slight contact between Savic and Wilshere and the second when the defender inadvertently handled the ball.Arsenal continued to apply the pressure and a great combination between Maitland-Niles and Wilshere down the left ended with the latter seeing his goal-bound poke cleared in last-ditch fashion by Le Tallec.Wenger sent Eddie Nketiah on for Willock in the 68th minute, but their two-goal EFL Cup hero failed to have the same impact as he did against Norwich City.Boakye had an opportunity to snatch all three points with nine minutes remaining but he sliced wide of the near post, though the Serbian side celebrated keenly at the full-time whistle, having secured a point that moves them a point clear in second place.
