Charles Schumer (D-NY) is calling on the Coast Guard and Army Corps. of Engineers to expedite repairs on both structures this summer instead of pushing it off until next year.“Superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on Long Island’s waterways and now without a main light tower beaming over Jones Inlet, it’s incredibly dangerous for boaters navigating their vessels in the dark or in foggy weather,” he said in a news release.The senator said boaters and others have expressed concern about the dangerous conditions in the inlet that connects the Atlantic Ocean and Middle Bay since the damage occurred in October.The highly traveled waterway is tucked between the west end of Jones Beach and Point Lookout on the east end of Long Beach.
Don’t blame others for actions of guiltyIt’s not often that you get two letters on the same day, Aug. 24, that look to blame someone or something else for the actions of the guilty.One blames Gov. Andrew Cuomo for opening the floodgates to make anyone with a Roman collar target for a lawsuit.Well what did you expect? Look at the track record of the cover-up in the Catholic Church. How many of you would feel comfortable leaving your little ones in a room alone with a priest?They lost their credibility due to their own actions, and now they have left themselves exposed to the consequences. Will there be some not-so-legitimate claims? Perhaps. But how many hundreds of the abused will never speak up or come forward as to what happened to them? Sounds like a wash to me. The Catholic Church brought this upon itself and has tarnished all its clergy. Blame Cuomo? Once again, take your eye off the problem and place blame elsewhere.The second letter was about not punishing children who are not vaccinated. Are we losing our minds here? The Aug. 17 editorial was right on the money. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one. The children aren’t the guilty ones here. It’s the parents’ refusal to comply with vaccinations, not caring how, if or when their actions will affect others based upon their beliefs. Sounds pretty selfish to me. Croce Sr.Ballston SpaInstall warning bar to stop bridge crashesI’m amazed at the lack of foresight by anyone in charge of making sure that our beautiful new bridge over Glenridge Road is protected from trucks and their drivers who can’t read a multitude of signs warning them they are about to be embarrassed after they run into said bridge.The solution sits less than three-tenths of a mile from our mayor’s office at the Dunkin’ Donuts in back of the Sunoco station. It’s called a truck height warning bar, which could save the Glenville police time and money, not to mention all the damage to the bridge and the time spent by motorists being stuck in these events.Trucks have had to stop and try to turn around on this narrow street, holding up traffic on an already-busy road. It took me 5 seconds to find them online.Hang this bar over the right-hand lane on Glenridge just before Bruce Drive, and then the truck driver has a chance to abort his trip, turn onto Bruce Drive and go in a different route to get to Route 50.They even come with warning lights and lit-up signs to let them know that they will hit the bridge. This isn’t rocket science. Why put up more signs that seem to do no good? So it will not be done again next year. Kurt Busch confirmed Sunday night that he will not return to Stewart-Haas Racing, ending a five-season run that included six NASCAR Cup Series victories, the 2017 Daytona 500 among them.Busch, who joined SHR in 2014, wrote, in part, on Twitter: “I would like to thank Stewart-Haas for 5 fantastic years driving the #41. … Unfortunately, it’s not in the cards for me to stay. England demonstrated their fighting qualities to secure a tie with hosts Wales on the opening day of the Home Internationals at Southerndown. After the morning foursomes were shared equally, Wales looked to have taken command in the singles and seemed to be heading for victory. But the England tail wagged to ensure a first day defeat was avoided. Double European Amateur champion Ashley Chesters boosted England with a 3 and 2 victory over David Boote which helped erase the setback of Ryan Evans losing to Mike Hearne by one hole. However, the Welsh took a grip with Evan Griffith and Ben Westgate recorded 2 and 1 wins over Ben Stow and Seb Crookall-Nixon respectively. New cap Dan Wasteney kept England in the hunt by beating Matthew Moseley by one hole while fellow debutant Tomasz Anderson recorded England’s biggest success with a 5 and 3 margin over Richard James. Still Wales looked to have the upper hand as Lee Jones overcame Paul Kinnear 2 and 1 while Zach Galliford beat Harry Casey 3 and 1. It was left to new English champion Nick Marsh to close the gap with a 2 and 1 win over Owen Edwards while Adam Chapman’s one hole victory over Jack Bush ensured the spoils were shared.
