The Clevver team that Hearst Magazines has rehired will resume producing videos within the next two weeks, according to a company rep. Those staffers include Jill Irvin Burriss, senior creative director of Clevver Style; the Hearst rep declined to identify which Clevver hosts are on board. (Pictured above: The set of Clevver News’ “Daily Hollywood Rundown” in the new Santa Monica facility.) The studio space, located at the Santa Monica Airport, will build on Hearst Magazines’ original entertainment projects. Those have included TV series like “Ready, Set, Pet” for the CW Network, and digital series including “This Is How I Made It,” “The Braid Up,” “Song Association” and “Go to Bed With Me.” The company also will use the studio for photo shoots and video productions across Hearst Magazines’ portfolio of titles including Cosmopolitan, Elle, Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar.“A robust presence on the West Coast is a natural next step for us as we continue to expand our creative capabilities and deepen our talent pool,” Hearst Magazines president Troy Young said in a statement. “Video has been a consistent growth driver for us and this studio will further enhance the quality and quantity of our entertainment offerings.”Michael Mraz, VP of Hearst originals and development, is heading the new studio. He’ll remain based in New York and split his time between NYC and in Los Angeles. He joined the company in 2014 and previously led digital content teams for Esquire, Esquire U.K., Road & Track, Car and Driver, Popular Mechanics and Town & Country before joining development team in 2016.“The new studio — and having the Clevver teams based there — will be a game-changer for us,” Mraz said. “It will enable us to be more ambitious with our development slate for Hearst Originals, learn from some of the very best of YouTube natives, and find new ways to cross pollinate ideas, talent, and brands between New York and L.A.”Hearst Magazines, a unit of Hearst, claims its print and digital properties reach a combined audience of 146 million readers and visitors monthly, including 73% of U.S. women. Stromatolites. Credit: Macquarie University The scientists, led by Associate Professor Nora Noffke of the Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, did not strictly find fossils of that age, but actually found web-like patterns criss-crossing the surfaces of the Pilbara sandstone. Dr. Noffke calls the patterns and textures Microbially Induced Sedimentary Structures (MISS) and said the structures were created by a complete ecosystem of different types of bacteria living in the Archean eon (roughly 3.8 to 2.5 GA) almost three-and-a-half billion years ago. The Pilbara region is a popular area for scientists searching for traces of early life on the planet because the ancient sedimentary rocks are extremely well preserved. The rocks were originally sand, and the region was originally a coastal plain. The sand was then built up into microbial mats by microbes, and over time the sand turned to rock and preserved the bacterial mats and structures such as MISS.A separate group of scientists working in the Pilbara published a paper last year describing their find of microbial fossil traces dated at around 3.4 billion years old. Similar fossils have also been found by Noffke’s group in sedimentary rocks in South Africa, but these were dated at 2.9 billion years old.Noffke’s team measured the carbon content in the rock and examined the ratio of carbon-13 to carbon-12. In non-living sources the ratio is around 1:99, while in photosynthesizing bacteria and other living organisms there is even less C13. Noffke and her group found the ratio in their samples was consistent with organic carbon. Unfortunately, there were no traces of preserved fats, proteins or fossilized microbes to definitely confirm the material is from living organisms.Microbial mats still form today in a few places such as the Pilbara. They contain mats of photosynthesizing cyanobacteria that produce food for use by themselves and other bacteria in the mat, and they also produce oxygen through photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria are believed to have created the Earth’s oxygen around 2.4 billion years ago. Dr. Noffke said her findings could help in the search for signs of early life on other planets, by giving more information on what to look for, as explained in an earlier Phys.Org article.Dr. Noffke presented the paper at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America in Charlotte, North Carolina in November. (Phys.org)—A group of US researchers studying some of the oldest rocks in the world in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, say they have found the oldest traces of life on Earth, dated at 3.49 billion years old. More information: A MICROBIAL ECOSYSTEM IN AN ANCIENT SABKHA OF THE 3.49 GA PILBARA, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, AND COMPARISON WITH MESOARCHEAN, NEOPROTEROZOIC AND PHANEROZOIC EXAMPLES, gsa.confex.com/gsa/2012AM/webp … ram/Paper205981.htmlAbstractGerald Friedman’s actualistic research on microbial processes in modern coastal sabkhas has opened the path of understanding of ancient microbial biota. Some of Earth’s oldest sedimentary rocks exposed in the Pilbara area of Western Australia include a mixed carbonate-evaporite-siliciclastic coastal sabkha. In the present day such sabkhas are widely colonized by microbial mats. Interacting with sedimentary processes such as erosion or evaporate crystal growth the microbial mats generate biogenic structures such as stromatolites or MISS. In the Pilbara area of Western Australia stromatolites occur which belong to the oldest fossils in Earth history. However, there also exists a plethora of well preserved MISS. These structures represent an entire ecosystem of surprising diversity. Actualistic comparison of fossil and modern biogenic structures and their facies-related distribution in sabkha settings points towards the presence of microbial communities in the Paleoarchean time highly similar to those we are familiar with today. On Friday, a study was published on WhoTracks.me where the performance of the most commonly used ad blockers was analyzed. This study was motivated by the recent Manifest V3 controversy, which reveals that Google developers are planning to introduce an update that could lead to crippling all ad blockers. What update Chrome developers are introducing? The developers are planning to introduce an alternative to the webRequest API named the declrativeNetRequest API, which limits the blocking version of the webRequest API. According to Manifest V3, the declarativeNetRequest API will be treated as the primary content-blocking API in extensions. The Chrome developers listed two reasons behind this new update, one was performance and the other was better privacy guarantee to users. What this API does is, allow extensions to tell Chrome what to do with a given request, rather than have Chrome forward the request to the extension. This allows Chrome to handle a request synchronously. One of the ad blocker maintainers have reported an issue on the Chromium bug tracker for this feature: “If this (quite limited) declarativeNetRequest API ends up being the only way content blockers can accomplish their duty, this essentially means that two content blockers I have maintained for years, uBlock Origin (“uBO”) and uMatrix, can no longer exist.” What the study by Ghostery revealed? This study addresses the performance argument made by the developers. For this study, the Ghostery team analyzed the network performance of the most commonly used ad blockers: uBlock Origin, Adblock Plus, Brave, DuckDuckGo and Cliqz’z Ghostery. The study revealed that these content-blockers, except DuckDuckGo, have only sub-millisecond median decision time per request. This small amount of time will not have any overhead noticeable by users. Additionally, the efficiency of content blockers is continuously being improved with innovative approaches or with the help of technologies like WebAssembly. How Google developers reacted to this study and all the feedbacks surrounding Manifest V3? Following the publication of the study and after looking at the feedbacks, Devlin Cronin, a Software Engineer at Google, clarified that these changes are not really meant to prevent content blocking. Cronin added that the changes listed in Manifest V3 are still in the draft and design stage. In the Google group, Manifest V3: Web Request Changes, Cronin said, “We are committed to preserving that ecosystem and ensuring that users can continue to customize the Chrome browser to meet their needs. This includes continuing to support extensions, including content blockers, developer tools, accessibility features, and many others. It is not, nor has it ever been, our goal to prevent or break content blocking.” The team is not planning to remove the webRequest API. Cronin added, “In particular, there are currently no planned changes to the observational capabilities of webRequest (i.e., anything that does not modify the request).” Based on the feedback and concerns shared, the Chrome team did do some revisions including adding support for the dynamic rule to the declarativeNetRequest API. They are also planning to increase the ruleset size, which was 30k earlier. Users are, however, not convinced by this clarification. One user commented on Hacker News, “Keep in mind that their story about performance has been shown to be a complete lie. There is no performance hit from using webRequest like this. This is about removing sophisticated ad blockers in order to defend Google’s revenue stream, plain and simple.” Coincidentally, a Chrome 72 upgrade seems to break ad blockers in a way that they can’t see or block analytics anymore if the web page uses a service worker. South African High Commissioner, Koleka Mqulwana speaking to trade South African Tourism hosted a breakfast this morning, announcing monstrous potential to grow their national economy by investing in the burgeoning Australian market. Lalie Ngozi, general manager of South African Tourism, thanked guests for the opportunity to break bread with the important people responsible for South Africa Tourism’s involvement in the Australian market place. “Australia has honoured South Africa and we are here to stay,” Ms Ngozi said. The Republic of South Africa Minister of Tourism, The Hon. Marthinus van Schalkwyk, expressed how important a stake in the Australian market is and that priority must be to develop this long-haul market.“We take this market very seriously and the support received by the trade has been appreciated. “Of the outbound market, 1 percent encompasses Australia, which is a good base to grow on,” Mr Schalkwyk said. Tourism is a primary solution to boost the South African economy. The government will focus on developing small businesses within the tourism sector; a joint initiative (Tourism Enterprise Program) providing small businesses a chance to break into the market which will in turn help develop rural tourism. Agents at the trade show wondered how South Africa would remain competitive in terms of price and safety. “The destination offers value for money and to remain competitive we have introduced many new products to offer any traveller regardless of their budget. Activity-based Tourism is the direction for 2012 and by attracting the Australian and New Zealand market, we will be focusing on outdoor holidays, golf, hiking and of course the safari,” Mr Schalkwyk said. Products will be sold around the experience with a variety of inclusions to provide extra value and incentive. Safety was a hot topic and South African Tourism said it takes the safety of travellers very seriously and addressed this excessively during the World Cup. “Just like all major cities around the world, there are areas you just do not go but international events have helped maintain our message of that it’s safe to travel,” Ms Ngozi said. Word of mouth is another initiative South African Tourism is planning to roll-out in Australia throughout 2012. Launching this week, the new website www.southafricanholidays.com.au will showcase deals and specials, creating a new online platform to the market. In an exclusive interview with e-Travel Blackboard, The Hon. Marthinus van Schalkwyk shared one of his favourite getaways, the Isi Mangaliso Wetland Park, located north of Durban. “It’s a sub-tropical paradise. It is absolutely wonderful and the only place you can see elephants on the beach; another example of the unique products on offer in South Africa,” he said. The Hon. Marthinus van Schalkwyk. Hawaii saw record visitor numbers in April (Image Ken Bradshaw) Visitor numbers to Hawaii reached a record high in April, pushing year-to-date tourism arrivals to the state up nearly ten per cent.According to figures released by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the Aloha State welcomed a record 647,194 visitors in April this year, beating the previous record of 618,230 set in 2006.The 11.3 per cent year-on-year increase in April arrival numbers also saw a record US$1.17 billion pumped into the state’s economy, with visitor spending climbing 26.8 per cent over the year before. Leading the way in growth was Hawaii’s top international market, Japan, whose arrival numbers during April rose a whopping 36.2 per cent to 86,685. Spending by Japanese visitors surged 45.8 per cent to $153.7 million. During the first four months of 2012, visitor numbers rose by 9.4 per cent to 2.6 million visitors, while spending rose by a healthy 16.7 per cent to US$4.78 billion.“It is important that we continue to support efforts that help to balance airlift and room availability for the overall benefit of our state’s tourism economy,” HTA president and chief executive Mike McCartney said. “The increases in airlift to the Hawaiian Islands with new routes, as well as the move to larger aircraft, were significant contributors to a robust April.”All Hawaiian Islands saw growth in total visitor expenditures and arrivals for April 2012, with Oahu experiencing a 12.9 per cent gain in arrivals, the largest visitor rise among the isles.

the ability to understand the political social natural ethical cultural and economic aspects of the world we inhabit; the ability to continue to learn; and the disposition to be intellectually nimble to exercise judgment and to communicate effectively We dont tell students what to think We strive to teach them how to think to give them the knowledge and skills to develop the courage to think for themselves and shape their own principles perspectives beliefs and solutions to problems We also provide students with seemingly endless ways to serve the common good the notion that we have an obligation to something bigger than ourselves This serves to strengthen our community and to make our students part of other communities helping them better understand what binds each of us together We want our students to understand and celebrate their wonderfully diverse identities experiences and backgrounds while also enjoying and appreciating the deep bonds of being a part of our college community Being part of a strong and diverse community requires an ability to talk honestly with one another about the real issues Thats why we push our students to develop skills and an ability to engage in thoughtful and respectful ways with those who have varying perspectives and with whom they may disagree sometimes profoundly We also seek to promote character principled lives work and play that have integrity an acknowledgment of the gifts we have been given and respect for others and ourselves Liberal arts colleges are steeped in opportunities to engage intellectually and to reflect deeply across all disciplines about what character means why it matters and how one might live it And there are many chances over four years for students to actually engage in challenges that test and develop their character At this challenging moment in our society and world it would be easy to despair But I do not I am optimistic because I know the power of competence community and character The liberal arts matter now more than ever Contact us at editors@timecom IDEAS TIME Ideas hosts the world’s leading voices providing commentary on events in news society and culture We welcome outside contributions Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of TIME editors "This proves once again that [ISIS] does not represent anything but its warped ideology and provides more evidence, Kenny OBrien said: "I am very proud of him. meaning refugees from another system are far more likely to be tossed back out in a game of interstellar hot potato than to settle on a hospitable world. told Sirius XM Radio at an event earlier this month.
